yay!
My new computer is working again. I also have a new hard drive and DVD burner. And I haven't lost any of my photos or MP3s. And I know it will bug her, but thanks be to Heather for her help with installation and moral support.

Fabulous! Of course I'm left wondering how the problem was solved, because I'm always curious about these things. Did you (or Heather?) have to re-install after all?
Yes, we reinstalled onto a new hard drive. (We gave up trying to make the old one boot, but it's still hooked up.) Now I have the fun of reinstalling all my programs and hardware.
