oops....

Sorry for the downtime. If you've e-mailed christopher@czarf.com in the last few days, I didn't get it.

Quick recap. Last weekend sucked. Mostly because I could have done a lot of cool things, but it all got put off for family stuff that should have been put off instead. But Tuesday and Wednesday made up for it. And I'm the proud owner of three new cameras, including a Destiny's Child camera with case. I can't wait for the sun to come back out so I can use it.

No Accounting for Taste

Riding the Skytrain

I step onto the Skytrain and sat down next to the door. The oily smell of suntan lotion permeates the train; a sure sign that summer weather has arrived. Indeed, it's only the second time this year that I've left home without wearing a jacket.
I have my Winner camera strapped around my neck. My intention for the afternoon is to finish a roll in it and go to the lab. I bend over, hold it up to my eye and take a photo of a discarded newspaper on the floor of the train. Another shot for the reject pile. I sit back and take out my notebook to write down details of this exposure. My hands throb from the movement. Eczema, most likely brought on by stress and the change in weather is making my hand sore and causing skin to flake off. I notice some flakes of skin on my bag and shirt as I put my notebook back into my bag. I brush them off.
I only have the smaller part of my Lomography bag with me. A couple people have referred to it as a "man-purse". I had just dropped off the larger part of my bag at a shoe repair place to have the strap reattached. Unfortunately the place where I had it repaired when the strap on the other side broke has since gone out of business. I hope this other guy does as good a job. I'll find out two days and seven dollars later.
The train pulls into Patterson Station. A voice buzzes over the public address system informing us that the 22nd Street Station is closed due to a police incident. I'm curious as to what has happened. I contemplate phoning my mother to find out. No doubt she has her portable radio held up to her ear listening to the news; getting whatever details are available. I decide it isn't worth the twenty-five cents to find out.
At Joyce Station a young man comes in and leans his back against the glass next to me. He looks a little silly wearing sweatpants with the word "volleyball"” printed across the backside; the "O"” in volleyball being replaced by a picture of a volleyball. I hear the announcement being repeated in the station. Volleyball gets off two stations later.
A disheveled guy with a pockmarked face stumbles in at Broadway Station. He walks past me, then steps back and looks at me. He points to the camera around my neck, then lifts his hands to his face and mimics taking a photo, shaking his head afterwards. I shrug and leave my sore hands on my lap. I'm thankful that he doesn't sit anywhere close to me.
I get off at Stadium Station. I have no idea where I'm going to shoot the remaining fifteen shots on this roll. I subsequently discover that I've missed running into Jen and Cliff by about half an hour.

My poor bag

Last Friday while I was out in Richmond shopping and having fun with Rachael, the strap on my somewhat-beloved Lomography bag broke off. It's broken on the opposite side before and I had it fixed and it didn't cost much. But I'm thinking maybe I should get a new bag instead. This one is looking a little worn out, and I think I need something a little more sturdy; something capable of taking the many pounds of cameras I carry with me every day. For now I've switched to my old army-surplus bag. It's smaller and stinks of cigarette butts, but I guess it will do for now. I just can't take as many cameras as I'd like.

Hey! Maybe I'll get one of those wire carts on wheels, like you see elderly people dragging behind them. Or maybe I should steal a shopping cart from a grocery store. I could carry my cameras and collect bottles and cans as well.

I'm such a winner!

Thanks Heather.

so anyway

This guy named [kren] added me as a Flickr contact tonight. He even favorited a couple of my photos.

Normally, this would not be a very odd occurrence. But in this case it is quite strange, because two months ago he was saying that my photos suck.

yawn

Looks like the website is back up. If you've e-mailed my czrf.com address any time in the last couple days, I probably won't get it. Sorry about that.

Not much going on. I'm catching up on my scanning, doing the first two rolls I shot with my Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim yesterday.

I saw every hour on the clock while trying to sleep last night. Something has been laying on my mind very heavy lately, and I'm not quite sure what it is. Or maybe I do know, but can't admit it to myself.

I'd like to go out and shoot photos right now. But the weather doesn't seem to be cooperating. I should run some errands before the Vandigicam meetup anyway.

I'm Freaked Out

A friend asked to see a recent photo of me, so I sent a link to the "Christopher Evans" tag on Flickr.

Then I read this at the bottom of the page.

"Related tags: leah, expired, jericho"

Expired?!?!?

(Yes, I know it means expired film. I still think it's a little freaky.)

In other news, the roof at my parents house started leaking yesterday; dripping in the living room. It's odd, since the roof was replaced under one year ago, there doesn't appear to be any problems in that area, (I climbed up there yesterday for a gander,) and there's been no rain to cause the leak, or pipes for that matter. Anyway, the roofer is here to check it out. I just think it's odd.

I'm such a naughty boy

After thinking "I could really use some time to myself" and promising a friend I'd try to drink less, I go out three days in a row and drink all three days. I'm such a naughty boy. But I don't regret it. I had fun times with great people. (OK, the party on Friday night was a bit of a drag, but they can't all be great times.)

But I think today is going to be for myself. I have an income tax rebate to deposit. I have a roll in my Ultra Wide & Slim to shoot. I have some film to pick up and drop off at the lab. I'm hoping to be able to watch Solaris tonight. And I still have twelve rolls of film to scan.

Stuff happens while I'm away.

Last night was fun, hanging out with Heather and Jen downtown.

It's seems recently that I haven't had much time for my family, I'm so busy taking photos and hanging out with friends. Sometimes it seems I'm only home to do laundry and scanning. (And I'm still way behind on the scanning.) Last month, during one particular week, I only ate at home once.

Anyway, today I got some family news. My brother Bob's wife is expecting their second child. The child should be arriving sometime in December. This will be niece/nephew number ten for me. Eleven if you also count my great-niece.

And when I got up this morning, my sister Elaine and her husband were over washing their car. This wouldn't be so newsworthy, except that a mere four months ago this particular brother-in-law fell off a ladder, breaking his ankle and five vertebrae in his lower back. He's still being held together with a huge brace. But it's impressive that he can move around enough to help wash a car.

There's going to be more fun with friends today. I wonder what cameras I should take.

Expired film is fun.

Then I figured that it might work in my Brownie Hawkeye. It's always overexposed a bit even with ASA 100 film.

Let's just say that I'm very pleasantly surprised by the results. The exposures seem right on, and the colours are wonderful.

This was shot with my Brownie Hawkeye with the lens reversed. I also ripped off Heather.

Counting down

I was about to take off for the lab and bike shop this afternoon. But dad held me up for a bit. The census forms came in the mail. Not only did dad decide to change my name, he also decided to change the spelling of it as well. I was almost called "CHRISOTER". He's gone to have a nap now, and I'm waiting for the liquid paper to dry.

Hey Jen. I got your letter today. Yes, we have to go shoot pool again. It doesn't matter if you aren't good. Just so long as you have fun. We should get some people together for that. Maybe a Vandigicam billiards night sometime.

Self-portrait in Chinatown

2006-04-21-11

I took this self-portrait with my Holga in Chinatown when I was with Ben, Rachael and Kathy. I'm wearing the scarf I bought that day.

Blustery day

I was supposed to go to the bike shop today. But I called up and they were too busy for me. I was only too happy to put it off considering how gorgeous the weather was today.

I counted how much I spent on transit last month. It came out to $119.75. And that doesn't count the two passes I put in Rachael's Banner camera. So I scammed the money for a month pass. It's the first time I've ever bought one. I took advantage of it today. It was nice going out and not feeling any time constraints. I strolled around town. I finished the roll in my Luxa six and shot rolls in the Bell & Howell and Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim that I bought yesterday at the flea market.

Mom told me that the skylight on their upstairs bathroom blew off. It was found in the backyard. But they got the roofers over quickly and they stuck it back on.

I've been spending the evening catching up on my scanning. I still have eight rolls to scan, and I dropped off four more today.

Now where was I?

A few years ago I had a weblog on my website. I'm embarrassed to admit that it was even more popular than my photos. But it attracted some unwanted attention, and caused some friction between people I cared about. I finally shut it down, mostly because a former lover was harassing me at the time and I didn't want her to use it as ammunition against me. The fallout from that relationship also made me feel that I didn't have anything left to share.

But I'm over that now. I feel that I might have something to write once in awhile. If you don't like it, then don't read it.
